Canada Raises Proof-of-Funds Requirement for Study Permits

· StudyPermit Editorial Team

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has updated the minimum funds that international students must show when they apply for a study permit.

Proof of funds is one of the main documents reviewed in a study permit application. Applicants need to show they can pay their tuition, cover living costs for themselves and any accompanying family members, and pay for return transport.

What this means for you: if you plan to apply, check the current figure on the IRCC website, make sure your bank statements cover the full required amount, and keep the funds accessible in the period leading up to your application.

Acceptable evidence usually includes bank statements, proof of a Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC), a student or education loan, or proof of scholarship or funding from within Canada. Our counsellors can review your documents before you submit.
